Not an Island

"No man is an island entire of itself; every man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe
is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as
well as any manner of thy friends or of thine
own were; any man's death diminishes me,
because I am involved in mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom
the bell tolls; it tolls for thee. " John Donne

I am no exception. I am not an island and the existence of my fellow men is a blessing to me. This is a truth that has been reinforced as I have relocated to Manhattan. I have met so many people in a short time. Each one of them has made my life better.

One of my favorite things about Manhattan is the throngs of people. I love watching the individuals. I wonder about their lives. How they arrived to their situation in life. From the homeless men to the fellow commuters I see on my way around the city.

The other day I was sitting in a restaurant with friends and a thought penetrated my brain/soul. The epiphany was that I see beauty in the people around me. I saw it in each of my friends sitting at the table with me… but also the other patrons of the restaurant, the ones closest to us were entertaining. These people that I observed to the casual glance would not immediately recall thoughts of beauty to mind… but they were. I loved that they were the way they were. Their identities were all unique, but a common culture bound them together. Their culture although different from mine has qualities that I very much admire and love.

I guess if there is a point to this post it is this. People are beautiful. If you look at them with the right perspective you can see it in some form or another.
