Dance as Medium

Dance is a powerful medium for expression. This is something that I have learned over the years from exposure to it at my cousins performances, performances at BYU-I, and most recently at various events or in the streets and subways of NYC. I think Dance is greatly underestimated as a medium for telling stories or communicating meaningful concepts or emotions.

I have been able to see a variety of performances of Modern Dance at Summer Stage in Central Park. This is not my favorite numbers that I saw a couple weeks ago, but it can give you a taste. This number was about Quantum Mechanics. I will say that not all "modern dance" is truly art in my opinion.

I also have loved seeing some really talented break-dancers. I saw this clip watching TED. If you don't know about TED, you should fix that. "TED, ideas worth thinking about" is worthy of your time. Anyways, enjoy the taste of modern and break dance in this video.

I recommend watching this dance video using Full-Screen.

Graffiti in Queens - 5-Point

This was some amazing graffiti that I saw in Queens. There is an area in Queens that every real NYC graffiti artist has visited. There are many murals of mind-blowing graffiti. I found out after talking to one of the graffiti artists tag name "Zenso" the structure where these murals have flourished, evolved, and been repainted over is being torn down. I asked "Zenso" how much it costs to paint the murals that adorn the walls of the structure. He told me that many of them four to five hundred dollars, but he said some of them easily exceed $1,000 dollars in paint.

NY Cultural Events Part II: Pink Martini - Sympathique

I went to this concert the other day, just thought I would share one of Pink Martini's songs I recorded from their performance. I will be adding a modern dance recording to this post later today. This song is called Sympathique.

Cultural Haven - Bastille Day - Banda Magda

I think perhaps my favorite part of NYC is that there is cultural events going on almost constantly. I love this, because I truly believe that culture and experiencing culture is something that really enriches your life. I find that it inspires me to think more creatively and the bottom line is that I just love it.

This is just a short post designed to give just a taste of the offerings of NYC.

The video has a French Indie artist preforming at a Bastille Day celebration in Manhattan on the east-side. I really enjoyed listening to this French artist perform at Bastille Day. She and her group were really great.

My Friends

This is probably long overdue. I have been thinking about this for quite some time. I have made some friends that have made my stay here in NYC much better than it would have been if I were really just going it alone here. Although this is true, new friends are definitely not a substitute for friends whom I have shared a great deal more of life and experience with. I feel like I rarely express my feelings especially in public places. I just wanted any of my Rexburg or Provo friends that are viewing this. Know that I miss you. Even though I am having a good time in NYC and have made some new friends. You are not easily replaced, I know I am not good at keeping up with you. Any NYC friends that are viewing this, know that I am grateful to have you in my life.
